Scholarship Opportunities

All Fields of Study

Ann Chesley Edmunds  

In 2014 Sterling Edmunds established the Ann Chelsey Scholarship Fund in honor of his mother.Each year it is awarded to one or more Mecklenburg County residents.

Old Dominion Electric Cooperative  

The ODEC Scholarship, which was created in 2003 by the Old Dominion Cooperative,and is awarded to students from Halifax or Charlotte Counties.

Wilson Memorial Scholorship

Established in 2016 for Halifax County residents.

Dr. W. Joseph Ferguson Memorial Scholarship 

Established in 2021 and is open to all students enrolled at SVHEC.

FOUNDATION Scholarship 

Since 2005, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation has awarded their own signature scholarships in the name of the Foundation.

One of the key principles is to keep education affordable by filling the funding gaps allowing students to focus on learning.

Education

Virginia Penick Estate Scholarship

Established by the Penick family in 2006 as a memorial to their mother, Virginia Penick who was a beloved teacher in Halifax County.

Workforce

Mark T. Trickey Memorial Scholarship -by Comfort Systems USA MidAtlantic

Since 2013, Comfort Systems supports scholarship opportunties for workforce training.  In 2023, Mr. J. R. Griffin announced  in addition to supporting HVAC and Welding, the scholarship may be awarded to children and grandchildren of a current Comfort Systems Employee. 

J. E. Burton Construction Scholarship 

Established in 2022,  this scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in Workforce Training Certification Programs offered through the SVHEC.

Elliott Electric, Inc Scholarship

Established in 2023 and is awarded to students enrolled in Workforce Training Programs.

Healthcare

Hope-Tone 

Established in 2002 and updated in 2018 by Chris Lumsden. He established this scholarship in honor of his parents, Alvelta Hope and Buford Tone Lumsden. It is designated to assist nursing/ medical students in their pursuit in the medical field.

Dr. Bill Bell Medical Education Scholarship 

Established in 2022 by the Dr. Bill Bell Medical Foundation is awarded to students pursuing a career in the medical field.

Information Technology

Microsoft Scholarship 

The Microsoft Scholar’s Program is awarded to those who are underrepresented in the IT field

and are enrolled in the SVHEC IT Academy.

Business

Leggett Scholarship 

Endowed in 2012, the Leggett Leadership Scholarship Fund was created to honor Tommy Leggett’s service to the Foundation and is awarded to students studying business, management, etc.

Arts Education

The Edmunds Scholarship For the Arts

Established in 2022, this scholarship will be awarded to low- and moderate-income students and minorities living in Halifax, Mecklenburg, or Charlotte County.  The recipients must seek to enroll in art classes offered by the Community Arts Center Foundation located at  The Prizery, 700 Bruce Street, South Boston, Virginia.

Graduating High School Senior Attending Any College

Brad Ballou Memorial

Established in 2022, this scholarship is dedicated to serving the youth in Halifax County in his honor and celebration of life.

Senior Exercise Group Scholarship

Established in 2023, this scholarship is for Halifax County High School Graduating Seniors persuing a career in Nursing.

Before beginning your application: Please have reference letters and a personal essay ready to upload.

APPLICATIONS are due:

December 1st- Spring Semester

April 1st-Summer Semester,

July 1st-Fall Semester.

Applications for SVHEC Cohorts are due 10 business days prior to class start date.

Awards will be made before the start of classes to your college and the email listed on your application.
