The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center and the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation Announces New Scholarship Fund to Honor Retired Director’s Legacy of 16 Years of Service

The Southern Virginia Higher Education Center’s (SVHEC) Board of Directors is proud to announce the establishment of the Dr. Betty Adams scholarship fund designed to honor the extraordinary leadership and unwavering dedication of Dr. Adams who retired after 16 years of distinguished service as the Executive Director of the SVHEC. This scholarship will support future generations of students and ensure that Dr. Adams’ profound impact on the institution and its community is carried forward.

The Dr. Betty H. Adams Scholarship will support women pursuing technical careers. An award will be given out annually to support women who pursue credit or non-credit technical programs at the SVHEC. Currently, women are outnumbered 2 to 1 by their male counterparts in technical programs at SVHEC. To address this representation gap, and to continue Dr. Adams’ legacy of fostering an inclusive and supportive campus environment, Dr. Adams has chosen to have the scholarship support women pursuing hands-on, technical careers.

Technical training provides a pathway to high wage, in-demand careers. Women who pursue these careers increase their earnings potential and unlock a number of career pathways.

Dr. Betty Adams stated “Having a scholarship established in my name is an incredible and humbling honor. Over the past 16 years, the SVHEC has been laser-focused on preparing citizens for well-paying, high demand jobs in the region. A large percentage of these jobs are in technical careers including IT, HVAC, Welding, Automation & Robotics, and more. Because women often fail to consider technical career options, this scholarship will encourage and support women who pursue these high demand, high wage careers.”

The Dr. Betty Adams Scholarship will be administered by the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation (SVHEF). The Dr. Betty Adams Scholarship is now open for donations to support this lasting tribute to Dr. Adams’ legacy. Those interested in making a donation can visit https://svhef.org/giving-to-svhef/ for more information.

SVHEF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and donations are tax-deductible.
