Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation, Expanding Education Opportunities Through Scholarships
The Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation (SVHEF) provides scholarship opportunities to students enrolled at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) located in South Boston, Virginia. Through these scholarships, the Foundation helps to make higher education and workforce training more accessible for residents of Halifax County and the surrounding region.
The SVHEC offers workforce certification in Information Technology, HVAC, Welding, and Industrial Maintenance. In addition, the SVHEC partners with Danville Community College (DCC) and Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) to provide expanded educational pathways, including associate’s degree programs.
“The SVHEC is a beacon for our region,” said Monica Hodges, Chair of the SVHEF. “The accessibility of degree programs or workforce training allows adults to continue their education while remaining in the community. These scholarship opportunities help strengthen our workforce,” said Hodges.
Since 2003, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation has awarded more than six hundred and thirty thousand ($630,000.00) dollars in scholarships. These awards have benefited thousands of students, helping them achieve their educational and career goals. Scholarships opportunities support students pursuing careers in Business, Education, Healthcare, Information Technology, Workforce Training, and Arts Education at The Prizery. In addition, numerous scholarships support all fields of study.
“The SVHEF Board has a strong fiduciary obligation to our donors to ensure every contribution goes where the donor wants it to go,” said Ted Bennett Chairman of the SVHEF Scholarship Committee. “One hundred percent of every donation designated for scholarships goes directly to students.”
The SVHEF is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of Chair Monica Hodges, Vice Chair Patricia Walker, Treasurer Jeff Davis, Secretary Brian Burton, Ted Bennett, John Cannon, Ned Covington, Ben Davenport, Sterling Edmunds, Dawn Miller, Linda Owen, Mayor Ed Owens, Larry Roller, Rebecca Saunders, and Darden Smith.
The Foundation’s staff includes Executive Director Kristy Johnson, Scholarship and Outreach Coordinator Liza Fulton, and Operations Manager Jamie Shelton.
The SVHEF is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization. All contributions are tax deductible and the Foundation does not charge an administrative fee to manage scholarship funds.
