Jacqueline Hubbard (middle) presents Justyce Reid Memorial Scholarship to Class of 2025 Peyton Tingen and Brysin Cawthon.

Graduating seniors of Halifax County High School are encouraged to apply for one of six scholarship opportunities offered by the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation (SVHEF). These scholarships are designed to support students planning to attend a college or university of their choice.

Scholarships are a “great opportunity for seniors to receive financial assistance toward their future goals,” said SVHEF Scholarship and Outreach Coordinator Liza Fulton.

These scholarships cover a wide variety of educational fields of study.  Among the available scholarships, the Senior Exercise Group Scholarship is awarded to seniors pursuing a career in nursing. The Rose and Garden Club Scholarship support students planning careers in farming, agriculture, community services, or human services. The Justyce Reid Memorial Scholarship is for students who wish to pursue a career in teaching special education. The Pathways D. C. Chism Memorial Scholarship supports seniors who are learning disabled or who have achieved through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The Curtis Randolph McCargo Memorial Scholarship is designated for seniors who are diligent helpers in the community and demonstrate overall excellent citizenship.  The Brad Ballou Memorial Scholarship supports all fields of study and aims to support students with an athletic background, but no required.

Applicants must submit a completed application form, including a personal essay that discusses financial need and outlines their passion, intended field of study and future career plans. The essay should also highlight extracurricular involvement, academic achievements, and both short- and long-term goals. In addition, students must provide two professional or academic letters of reference.

“The time is now, gather those letters of recommendations from your teachers as soon as possible,” said Fulton noting schedules become increasingly busy as graduation approaches.

Scholarship awards support tuition and books only.  Payments will be mailed directly to the recipient’s chosen institution. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, religion, gender, or sexual orientation and are based upon the availability of funds and additional qualifying criteria.
