Scholarships were awarded to over a dozen students enrolled in post-secondary education courses via Danville Community College, Old Dominion University online, and Southside Virginia Community College.  In addition, thirty-one students enrolled in Workforce Training programs offered at the Higher Education Center received scholarship funds.  

This Fall, the Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation (SVHEF) scholarship committee has thus awarded over $37,000.00 for students living in Halifax, Mecklenburg, and Charlotte Counties. 

The SVHEF offers a variety of scholarships.  Several scholarships which support any field of study are: Ann Chesley Edmunds Scholarship, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) Scholarship, Dr. W. Joseph Ferguson Memorial Scholarship, Wilson Memorial Scholarship and The Foundation Scholarship.  

Scholarships for specific areas of study include: the Leggett Scholarship which supports Business Management, Virginia Penick Estate Scholarship which supports Education.  Two scholarships are for those pursuing a career in healthcare: Hope-Tone Scholarship and Dr. Bill Bell Medical Education Scholarship.  Listed below are the students who received scholarships awards this fall. 

The Wilson Memorial Scholarship was awarded to: Brock Beumel an engineering student at DCC, Zachary Jackson studying Cyber Security at SVCC, and Zachary Perkins who is studying Computer Science at ODU online.  

The Ann Chesley Edmunds Scholarship was awarded to Kaitlyn Allen studying Criminal Justice at SVCC.

The Virginia Penick Estate Scholarship was awarded to Samantha Anderson who is studying Education at SVCC.

Two nursing students, Brandi Brooks and Christopher Carmichael, received awards from the Dr. W. Joseph Ferguson Memorial Scholarship and  Hope-Tone Scholarship.

SVCC Healthcare students who received awards from the Hope-Tone Scholarship are Zykeriah Chambers, Cynthia Penick, and Mikayla Vassar.

The Dr. Bill Bell Memorial Scholarship was awarded to Kassiti Jackson studying nursing at SVCC..

The Legget scholarship was awarded to Kristin Lacks who is studying Medical Office Administration.

The Mark T. Trickey Memorial Scholarship by Comfort Systems MidAtlantic USA was awarded to Ashley Clay who is studying Education.

The ODEC Scholarship was awarded to Blake Wilkerson who is enrolled in General Studies.

Scholarships designated to Workforce Training programs include studies in Information Technology, Welding, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC).

J. E. Burton Construction Scholarship supported HVAC and Welding students.  HVAC students include Lionell Libunao, and Harrison Snead. Welding students include Isaiah Boxley-Bellamy, Daniel Porterfield, and Erica Williams.

Elliott Electric, Inc Scholarship supported HVAC and IT students.  HVAC students awarded are Brandon Gayle, Dwight Gomes, and Cameron Royster.  IT students awarded are Cameron Jones, Wyatt McAbee, and Dustin Shotwell.

Mark T. Trickey Memorial Scholarship by Comfort Systems MidAtlantic USA was awarded to HVAC students Calvin Brassell and Michael Brizendine.

The Foundation Scholarship was awarded to HVAC students Joseph Williamson and Robert Powell.  Also, Chase Zaboroski studying Information Technology was awarded the Foundation Scholarship.

The Microsoft Scholarship is awarded to IT Academy Students.  The Microsoft Scholars recipients include Muhsin Brickhouse, Xavier Brooks, Morgan Dickerson, Elissa Hairston, Taniyah Jones, Darryl Kent, David Medley, Hannah Mull, and Tiffany Stolzenthaler.  

Applications for the Spring 2025 semester are due December 1st.  The SVHEF Scholarship Application is available online at https://svhef.org/ or students may pick up a paper copy located at the SVHEF office.  All applications must include a personal essay, and two letters of recommendation.
