The Southern Virginia Higher Education Foundation provides a variety of scholarship opportunities for students to continue their education following high school. The SVHEF awards about $50,000.00 annually in scholarships that support career fields like nursing, business, information technology, workforce training, and many more. The bouquet of funding now blossoms with the Rose and Garden Club.

Club President Juanita Johnson presented a $500.00 check to SVHEF Scholarship and Outreach Coordinator Liza Fulton to launch club’s scholarship. The Rose and Garden Club Scholarship is geared toward students pursuing a career in farming, agriculture, community, and human services.

The Rose and Garden Club formed in 1964 through the leadership of Nannie Jennings. Prior to integration, Jennings would often visit African American homes in the county teaching families home economic skills like: sewing, and how to raise flowers and gardens. The club covers an array of counties in Southern Virginia including: Halifax, Pittsylvania, Mecklenburg, Charlotte, and Brunswick. The club will award their first scholarship in the Spring of 2024 to a graduating senior who lives in one of the counties previously listed.

Be on the lookout for Rose and Garden Club events and fundraisers on their Facebook page.
